FOR THE NATURE CONSERVANCY/ALABAMA CHAPTER
BALTIMORE, MD (March 11, 2002) - Alexander &
Tom, Inc. (www.alextom.com) an interactive marketing
agency, has been chosen by The Nature Conservancy
to develop an educationally based website (www.nowandforeveralabama.org)
that provides an overview of the diversity of
plant and animal life found in Alabama. Inside
this multimedia website you will get a glimpse
of Alabamas natural legacy - the wealth
of plants, animals and land preserved by The Nature
Conservancy.
Competition was fierce but Alexander & Tom
was awarded the contract based on creative talents,
technological skills and e-learning experience.
Alexander & Tom partnered with The Nature
Conservancy and Alabama Power to develop an interactive
website that promotes the campaign, "Now
and Forever Alabama," a fundraising initiative
to help preserve and protect Alabamas natural
heritage.
"Alabama is one of the most biologically
diverse states in the nation. The conservation
needs are tremendous, and there is a great deal
of pressure on conservation agencies and organizations
for their limited resources. We feel that the
Website will be an ideal way for educators, students,
and the community to get a sense of the beauty
of our preserves and to see common and rare species,
their habitats, as well as learn about our efforts
to protect these gems of Alabama's natural heritage
for future generations," states Chris Oberholster,
Director of Conservation, Planning and Stewardship.
The site will be used as an educational tool
for grades K-12, as well as to increase the awareness
of all Alabamians about the importance of conservation.
The education-based site will also strengthen
outreach communications to educators and students
in grade levels K-12. By incorporating the existing
science and social studies curriculum, the website
is designed to serve as a classroom tool for teachers
across the state. The site provides a teacher
resource section for science grades K-12 and social
studies grades K-9 that includes lesson plans
and classroom activities that adhere to the Alabama
Education Association guidelines. In each grade
level section, teachers are able to access the
information and printable files that contain lesson
plans compatible with their curriculum. The site
also includes an activity center where learning
is fun. Children can explore four illustrative
activities that introduce interactivity with an
educational twist. For instance, "The Growing
Room" allows the user to plant lima beans
without getting their hands dirty then in seconds
can see how they grow.
Alexander & Tom created a visually engaging
virtual tour that will provide an overview of
three ecoregions in the state. The tours depict
plants, animals, habitat, conservation and ecological
issues of the Grand Bay Savanna, Cahaba River,
and Paint Rock River Valley. In total, The Nature
Conservancy of Alabama manages 16 preserves.
Alexander & Tom developed the site using
their extensive background in technology and interactive
multimedia designs. The website was built using
HTML and Flash technology. It also includes slideshows
and videos that provide a virtual journey through
the nature preserves of Alabama.
