BALTIMORE, MD (October 4, 2002) - Alexander &
Tom Inc. (www.alextom.com), a Baltimore based
interactive marketing agency, announced today
the completion of an educational Hurricane CD-ROM
for The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
FEMA contracted Alexander & Tom to develop
a comprehensive CD-ROM to provide a resource containing
hurricane awareness and preparedness.
The goal of the CD-ROM is to educate the user
about hurricanes and provide critical information
and tools. The CD-ROM will appeal to homeowners,
businesses, tourists, emergency management, and
residents in hurricane prone areas of New England.
Community information pages and detailed maps
of flood zones in New England states are housed
on the CD. The content concentrates on the necessary
actions that need to be taken before, during,
and after a hurricane as well as provides information
regarding shelter locations, evacuation routes,
mitigation tips, and disaster kits.
Illustrating the current necessity for this project
are these statistics:
Damage from more frequent and severe weather
calamities and other natural phenomena during
the past decade required 460 major disasters to
be declared, nearly double the number of Presidential
declarations issued for the previous ten-year
period and more than any other decade on record.
During the 1990-99 period, FEMA spent more than
$25.4 billion for declared disasters and emergencies
compared to $3.9 billion (current dollars) in
disaster aid for the 1980-89 period.
This is the second time Alexander & Tom has
created a CD-ROM focused on Hurricane education.
In April of 2000, Alexander & Tom was hired
by the Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA)
to develop an educational platform concerning
hurricanes. Alexander & Tom created an interactive
CD-ROM to educate students on hurricanes which
featured satellite footage displaying storm formations,
actual video footage of hurricane disasters, 3-D
graphic illustrations, and an interactive quiz
that provided instantaneous feedback.
